The first radio broadcast occurred on Nov 2, 1920 when
President Warren Harding made a speech. 1920 was also the year
that the 19th amendment to the Constitution gave Women the right to
vote! Most entertainment was local and in the area
of Algoma, transportation was mainly still the horse and buggy although
the automobile "Tin Lizzy" was making it's entrance. No TV, No
Radio, so the entertainment consisted largely of people visiting friends
and relatives, playing games, singing and dancing largely to the local
dance bands in the area. Algoma, and the surrounding area, had a lot
of bands that played mostly polka and waltz music. Any reason to have a
party, a kermiss, or some other festival would bring out the bands and the
food, drink and of course the local people to enjoy!
